Nutbag apocalyptic preacher (and BFF of U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback) Lou "A Sexual Insanity Will Be Unleashed Upon the Earth" Engle apologized a couple of weeks ago after legislation that would impose a life sentence or the death penalty for the "crime" of
"aggravated homosexuality" in Uganda was promoted at one of his TheCall events in that country. Engle pleaded ignorance, claiming he left the prayer meeting early to catch a flight and didn't find out about the bill getting publicized until much later.
One prominent author, Jeff Sharlet, is questioning Engle's sincerity.
In a guest post
on the
blog of psychology professor Warren Throckmorton, Sharlet
wonders whether Engle or his allies in Uganda is lying. Sharlet
interviewed David Bahati and Julius Oyet, two
of the architects behind the country's anti-homosexuality bill, and they
"were ecstatic at what they perceived as
Engle's strong support of the bill" and claimed "Engle had explicitly
expressed
his support for the bill, telling them that he had to lie to the Western
media because gays control it."
Sharlet also spoke with Engle,
who told him, "We're just trying to take a stand to
encourage them in their stand."
In his apology, Engle
wrote:
"...I am grateful that I had theNot quite, Sharlet answered.privilege of going to
Uganda and meeting Christian leaders who explained their heart
concerning the Bill. Not one was carrying even an ounce of hatred for
homosexuals. They actually desired to influence the lawmakers in Uganda
to lessen the penalties."
Oyet and Bahati are strong supporters of the death penalty, although Oyet doesn't quite know what homosexuality is. (He
apparently can't wiki.) Sharlet asked him if "he believed homosexuals
are demonically possessed." Oyet called homosexuality "abnormal sex."
"YouUh, no. And that is not a goldenwould say yes. Because one drives you to that. Because
homosexuals, they would now eat their own feces. They would eat their
own waste. That is what they call golden shower where you lick the anus
of someone. Isn't that demonic?"
shower
. Even some heteros are into golden showers, too.Engle's speech from his trip to Uganda (via Current TV's documentary Missionaries of Hate), in which he
calls Uganda "ground zero," says they're "trying to restrain an agenda
that is going to hurt the nation and hurt families" and prays for God to
"make a stand for righteousness."
Hey, Sen. Brownback. Ready
to denounce Engle yet?
