Former Chiefs OT John Alt's son appears to have a bright future in the NHL.
Remember John Alt? Sure you do, he was a left tackle on the Chiefs during the '80s and '90s. And he was good, helping to make the Chiefs an offensive powerhouse back in the day. Alt's son, Mark, who was born in Kansas City, is also quite the athlete. Mark just wrapped up his senior season at Cretin-Derham Hall high school in Minnesota, where he excelled at his old man's sport as quarterback of the football team, but he really caught scouts' eyes as a standout defenseman on the hockey team.
Mark Alt most likely will be NHL-bound after this weekend's entry draft.
Mark passed on a football scholarship at the University of Iowa (where his dad played), and is instead lacing up the skates for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. That seems like a smart move, given his high draft projection. NHL scouts have Mark
pegged as the 37th best North American skater prospect in the draft taking place this weekend at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

According to the league's draft card for Alt, he possesses plenty of unpolished talent that scout
Jack Barzee anticipates will become more refined now that he is committed fully to hockey. Barzee described Alt in an NHL.com
piece by saying, "He's got a good shot and is aggressive -- he's the type of colt I want to ride if I were a coach."
If the draft goes roughly in the order of the league's scouting ratings (which isn't likely) 6-foot-3 blueliner could find himself going as early as the second round. After playing the customary two or three years of college hockey, Alt, as a native of Kansas City, would be an anomaly if he makes it onto an NHL squad. A search of the NHL's all-time player log, reveals that only one Kansas City native, a guy named
Matt Hentgen, has ever played a game in the league.
