Swapping Section 8 housing help for sexual favors is pretty gross. It's even grosser when it's a man of God doing it.
The Rev. Meredith F. Sullivan admitted in February that he'd bumped people up the waiting list for Section 8 housing and lied to HUD about tenant income and household compositions in exchange for sex (or the promise of sex) from residents at the Sycamore Grove Apartments (2920 East 17th Street), which he managed, from June 1, 2004, to July 1, 2009.
Sullivan, 55, was sentenced today to 16 months in federal prison and
ordered to pay $34,444 in restitution.
The scheme caused HUD
to overpay Section 8 rental subsidies by $104,167.
As for the
preaching, Sullivan is still listed on the Bethel Baptist Church
website as the church's pastor.
Sullivan was installed as the church's pastor on May 7, 2006, after
serving as one of the church's associate ministers, according
to the website.
The site says of Sullivan's tenure as pastor:
Doubt God guided Sullivan here.In the few months since his Pastorship (May - November 2005) baptized
many Believers, and developed the first Bylaws of the church. He
continues, with God's help and guidance, to take the church higher
through a new vision. With God's help, leadership and guiding Pastor
Sullivan's footsteps, there is no limit to the heights that are written
in the plan of the Lord.
