Voters in Kansas City, Missouri, won't get their first crack at the mayor's race until the primary in February 2011. The race is young, but already one of the candidates has reworked his message.
Mike Burke, a development lawyer active in civic affairs, announced his candidacy with the slogan "Don't give up the ship." The words appeared on billboards done in a blue-and-green color scheme, emphasizing the nautical theme.
The ship has sailed. Burke continues to use blue and green in his materials. But the Kansas City-as-wounded-vessel imagery has been scrubbed from existence.
So did Burke rethink the idea that Kansas City was craving a master and commander?
Burke's campaign guy, Pat O'Neill, says the ship billboard was the first of several "teasers" designed to arouse curiosity and begin building name recognition. O'Neill says Burke is following that message with the theme "Kansas City: A City of Opportunities."
The rats may return to City Hall's lower decks.
