Kansas statehouse candidate Rob Bruchman will put his campaign sign in your yard even if you didn't ask for one (updated)

In Johnson County, we're used to candidates stealing their opponents' signs. But this is the first time we've heard of a candidate putting signs in people's yards without permission.

Paul Hemenway says this happened to him a week ago Monday, when he found a Rob Bruchman sign in his front yard, near 97th Terrace and Nall.

Hemenway says he never gave permission for Bruchman, a Republican running for the Kansas Statehouse, or anyone on his staff to put a sign in his yard. A mass-produced letter left at his front door thanked him for his support. Again, news to Hemenway.

Attached to the note was information on advance voting. Hemenway says he immediately uprooted the sign.

"I understand him wanting to put the sign there," Hemenway says of his high-traffic areas. "But I'm certainly not putting one out there for a candidate that I'm not supporting."

I called Bruchman yesterday to see if he's been putting campaign signs up in people's yards without permission. He didn't answer. If he calls back, I'll update this post. Update (11:25 a.m. June 3): Bruchman sent this message via e-mail:
Thank you for your message. I only placed yard signs in lawns where I

had previously spoken with a member of the household and received their

permission to come back and place a sign. The purpose of the thank you

card was to thank those individuals who had given me permission to place

signs in their yards.

Bruchman is running for the former seat of Kevin "Those Aren't My Kids" Yoder. His primary opponents are Stephanie Sawyer Clayton and Matthew Webb. Bruchman's visit to longtime Republican Rob McKnight led to the political consultant switching parties and entering the race.

Don't expect to see another Bruchman sign in Hemenway's yard. He says he plans to support Clayton or McKnight. He's also planning a visit to the Overland Park City Council to talk about the issue. City ordinance doesn't impose a penalty against putting a sign in someone's yard without the homeowner's permission.

Rob Bruchman is not an honest guy. He claims to be a republican who is against illegal immigration yet he employs illegals for his lawn service "bruchman lawn l.l.c.". The audacity of this guy is alarming.

Rob is a hardworking, trustworthy guy. If the sign was placed there without permission, it was obviously a misunderstanding.

I have known Rob Bruchman for 20 + years. If he believed he had permission from a family member of the Hemenway's I believe him. Rob is an honest & respectful man. Perhaps this was a misunderstanding?

It's funny I spoke with the Republican party of Johnson county and they said they have had numerous complaints about him putting out signs without permission from the property owner. They have asked him to go back and remove signs, but so far he has not done so. The number for the Republican party in Jonson county in Kansas is 913-341-8683. I guess this makes one of us a liar.

Maybe he should consider building name recognition the old-fashioned way - by getting involved in his community, investing time with local schools, businesses and neighborhoods.
