ESPN The Magazine runs a column by an anonymous professional athlete in each of the major sports. Since it's summertime, "Player X" is a Major League Baseball player, and he's apparently a fan of the All-Star Game but no fan of Kansas City.
In the July 12 issue of The Magazine, Player X writes:
Iadmit I'm kind of a geek when it comes to this stuff. Even in years I
have made the team, I've still tuned in. That's not true for all
players, though. Most guys don't watch if they don't make it. I have
one teammate who actually complained about being named an All-Star
because it's the only week in eight months he can spend decent time with
his family, away from baseball. I also know for a fact that guys
around the majors are not psyched about the prospect of spending
All-Star week in Kansas City in 2012. The park isn't great, and there's
just not much going on in that town.
Boo-effing-hoo. If you can't get jacked to play here ...

Kansas City's ballpark always has been of the favorites of MLB players, EVEN BEFORE THE RENOVATION!! I've heard and read this over and over through the past years. Players ove coming to Kansas City. Not to mention the thrill of hitting into the fountains. STLman you keep enjoying that '85 world series runner-up trophy. We all know life is easier in the National League!!
Yeah, I hate the increasing scrutiny of police officers arresting people for endangering lives and driving drunk.
Hey douche MC. I don't hate it, only wish we could enjoy what we have without the ever increasing scrutiny of the authorities. And instead of criticizing others, why not give us your ideas of what to do when not at the bowling alley.
Hey STLMan, if you hate it so much, leave. And hopefully you'll get a DUI on your way outta town.
....and the city gets to chip in $500,000 to help put it on. Of course we don't actually HAVE the money.... we just won't mow the boulevards at all in 2012.
It ain't just Kansas City, players are not all that excited about any all-star game. Unless it is their first.
As if all those fat out of shape baseball players aren't excited about the prospect of stuffing their beer guts full of BBQ in between chew dips.
And no major leaguer is going to be driving around town (one would hope) so I don't think DUIs (should) come into the picture.
The park is nice, and that's a near-consensus opinion. Any time a national writer tours the parks, Kauffman gets high marks (and the tone is always one of genuine surprise).
Activities? Yeah, we're lacking. Yeah, we're not New York or LA. Neither are most major league cities. Milwaukee? Cincinnati? Cleveland? St. Louis? All about the same as KC.
Hey! I agree with this dude.
Born and raised here and he's right. There is zip to do in this town. Go to the P&L District and get a DUI on the way back to the hotel. Go to the Speedway and see the shops and restuarants and get a DUI on the way back to the hotel. Go to the Plaza for dinner and get a DUI at 39th and Main St. like last week. Now let's hear from the people that will say there is plenty of events going on in this town, then get a DUI on the way back to the hotel.
