U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint will give folks in Johnson County a taste of South Carolina's baroque politics with an appearance on behalf of Congressman Jerry Moran this morning.
DeMint is the Fox News/talk radio darling who said health care would be President Obama's "Waterloo" if Democrats' plans for reform failed. He's been cast as the Tea Party's best friend in Washington, which even his Republican colleagues find a little creepy.
Moran is in a race with Congressman Todd Tiahrt to replace Sam Brownback in the U.S. Senate. The two contestants are behaving like angry villagers, pitchfork tines sharpened, in an attempt to win the favor of antigovernment voters in the Republican primary.
DeMint is quick to play the "socialism" card, which might create an awkward moment if anyone at today's town hall meeting in Olathe mentions that Moran's district counts heavily on farm subsidies. But it probably won't come up.

If people of good will across the United States will step up and donate to Tom Clements' campaign Tom will be able to drag DeMint back to South Carolina to avoid either losing outright or winning by a thin margin. Either way, common sense wins. Either the DeMinted one has to run back to South Carolina, leaving common sense candidates in other states alone to fight their battles with their local right wing nut cases, or else he risks losing, or winning with under 50% of the vote, which will crush any illusions DeMint has of occupying the Oval Office some day.
