Along with calling in Teabagging specialist U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint for back-up, Jerry Moran is taking to the airwaves to prove he's the most right man for the job of replacing Sen. Sam Brownback, and he's leaning on one key issue to do it: Immigration.
With conservatives questioning his conservatism, Moran -- in a tight primary race against fellow congressman Todd Tiahrt -- is running radio ads promising to close the borders, and is banging on the Obama Administration for suing Arizona over its controversial immigration law.
"Suing the State of Arizona will do nothing to stop illegal immigration," Moran said this week about the suit. "Instead of spending money on a lawsuit, the Obama Administration should use those resources to secure the border."
His radio ad promises he will do just that -- and it's a good thing! While you might expect voters to be clamoring for wisdom on how to create jobs for the unemployed, it's his voting record on immigration and wiretapping that has the Washington Times worried:
Tiahrt has the support of virtually every conservative leader in America -- from Sarah Palin to Karl Rove, from Bill Bennett to Steve Forbes, from Sean Hannity to Mark Levin.
Why?"Tiahrt knows what issues are important to us," explains American Conservative Union President David Keene whose ACU index shows Tiahrt and Moran not that far apart. "Tiahrt not only votes right, when something is important he's been on the House floor or in committee battling for our causes."
Cases in point:
* Tiahrt has never once voted to increase federal taxes. But Moran voted against elements of the George W. Bush tax cuts.
* Moran voted against authorizing military tribunals to try suspected terrorists and against Bush's efforts to wiretap suspected foreign terrorists communicating within the U.S. On the other hand, Tiahrt led the charge within the House Appropriations Committee to block Obama from moving detainees from Guantanamo Bay to the U.S. mainland.
* Moran voted for federal legislation that effectively removes requirements for citizenship verification for those receiving government health care.
So there he was last week, interrupting the LeBron-a-thon on local sports radio by going on about how amnesty isn't the solution, successfully boiling a maddeningly complicated issue into a scary, scary buzzword. Welcome to campaign season.

Dan's in about the same place I am. I don't care for those that are all the way to the right or left. I can't stand folks like gd.....I've seen some of gd's other posts and there's never anything intelligent to offer.
But Dan, viciousness from the right? I know there are people trying to impress their political opinions in an aggressive way on both sides. Libs try to suggest conservatives are bad people b/c they don't want to give all their tax dollars away and support the worthless (more of a passive-agressive approach). Many conservatives are stupid paranoid right now and lash out regularly.
I don't fully understand what an independant stands for, but if it means they have the right to be a centrist, that's who I am. Not to far to the right, not too far to the left. Not every issue is so cut and dried.
I am so tired of the Fascist Right Wingers bullying everyone who won't toe their line and their viscousness, whining after they lost bad to the "liberals". I disassociated myself from both "Main stream" Parties and have gone Independent.

Tiahrt may have big names backing him, but a lot of Kansans like myself don't see that as a good thing. Jerry lives in rural Kansas and represents rural Kansas. And what we need is someone to represent Kansas, not someone to align with the interest of east coast pundits and Alaskan governors. Moran is going to win because we Kansans will not get caught up in the hype of the race.
