One of Terry Riley's suspiciously green yard signs has found its way on to the site of the Citadel project in an apparent attempt to remind voters that he once championed the failed endeavor.
Citadel Plaza was a dream to build a sparkling retail redevelopment at 63rd and Prospect. The city advanced the project $5 million so that the developers could begin clearing the site. Big mistake.
Nearly every move the development team made resulted
in a lawsuit or a regulatory action. Last month, a grand
jury indicted two of the principals, William M. Threatt Jr.
and Anthony Crompton, for improper asbestos handling.
Riley fought for the project, which sits in his Kansas City, Missouri, council district, until the end. Last year, he encouraged his colleagues to "get creative" in trying to come up with an assistance package for the stalled development.
The location of the yard sign at the Citadel site suggests that Riley's work on behalf of the project left a bad taste. His campaign placard -- he's running for Jackson County legislator -- sits between wooden signs developers put up when they're about to begin construction. The lack of activity at the Citadel site makes it evident that "Coming soon!" is more like "Coming never!"
The Riley sign that sits in the shadow of the Citadel signs is the only one on the block.
