Update (10:14 a.m. July 21): The campaign to save the crumbling Cosby Hotel at Ninth and Baltimore has worked.
The Star reports that the city has decided to spend $4,000 to stabilize a corner of the building (the city will send the bill to the building's owner, Rick Powell), which also buys time for preservationists to come up with a plan to restore the building that's apparently full of asbestos.
Developer Adam Jones may still buy the building -- Powell
slashed the price from $500,000 to $150,000 -- and he's looking into
private financing. Or Powell could "donate the property to the Historic
Kansas City
Foundation, which would then make it a nonprofit venture and eligible
for potential stabilization assistance from the National Trust," the
Star reports.
Either way, a piece of Kansas City history is still standing, which is
rare around here.
Original Story (12:05 p.m. July 13): The Cosby Hotel's date with
the wrecking ball appears to be off. The Star
reported that the abandoned but "historic" downtown hotel at 9th
and Baltimore has a potential buyer in developer Adam Jones (no
wonder the city's dangerous buildings department didn't call me back).
Jones
will have his work cut out for him. The city called for an emergency
demolition for the crumbling building. Jones has until Wednesday to
prove has the dough to buy the place and a
plan to fix it up.
I stopped yesterday to snap what I thought
may be a few of the last photos of the building before its
transformation into a parking lot.
Lots of asbestos and warning signs are posted around the building, which is wrapped in red "danger" tape.
The back of the building had crumbled. Notice the half wall?

I want to buy this building...I have a great plan for it! If anyone knows who I can talk to, please call me or have the powers to be call me!!! Eric...816-812-3333... THANK YOU TO ANYONE THAT CAN HELP!!!
As you may have noticed from your morning walk... with the exception of the exposed west wall this building looks remarkably intact for such a huge danger to people and pets. Don't feel bad about Dangerous Buildings not returning phone calls.... they never do until the building is dust.
