The fight between Todd Tiahrt and Jerry Moran for Sam Brownback's soon-to-be-vacant U.S. Senate seat has been plenty ugly in recent weeks. The two Republicans are trying to out-conservative the other. But only one man is conservative enough to win the heart of the most important vigilante leader and Nazi sympathizer of the last decade.
In July 22 press release, Jim Gilchrist endorsed Tiahrt.
"With his strong track record of demanding the Federal Government to enforce our laws and secure our borders, Todd Tiahrt is the only candidate who truly has a committed stand on the issues of immigration reform and border security," the grammatically challenged Gilchrist writes in his endorsement announcement. "Kansas needs Todd Tiahrt as it next US Senator to end the chaos of illegal immigration."
Gilchrist is the founder and president of the Minuteman Project -- that armed vigilante group that hangs out on the border, waiting to bust illegal immigrants and make fake videos of themselves murdering people for fun. The Southern Poverty Law Center reported that Gilchrist also accepted help from white supremacists during his own 2005 run for the House, so he's a guy you absolutely want on your side.
Just to drive home how big of a deal this endorsement is, here's Gilchrist describing the Minuteman Project to the OC Register:
Am I happy at the outcome of this whole movement? I am very, very sad, very disappointed.Meanwhile. Moran was just endorsed by the Kansas City Young Republicans, for his "'character, integrity, and straightforwardness." But no skinheads with the courage to point a gun at a man trying to make better life for himself have come out behind Moran yet.
