The Chiefs kick off training camp in St. Joseph today, and it has Mayor Bill Falkner pumped about the flood of cash the team will bring his city.
Falkner says with the influx of tourists, media members, and team
employees flocking to Missouri Western State University, St. Joseph is
giddily anticipating millions of dollars to begin coursing through the
city.
"We expect it to pay huge dividends," he says about St. Joseph's turn in the spotlight. Plus, the mayor notes, football is helping to temporarily ease the city's 7.9 percent unemployment rate. "We've already had restaurants beef up their staffs a little bit," the diehard Chiefs fan says.
One problem the Chiefs might bring St. Joe is a distracted head of government. Falkner plans on sneaking out of the office to watch his favorite team practice.
