Here's a question I get a lot, usually from people who have moved to Kansas City from one of the coasts: Why isn't there a decent Jewish delicatessen in the metro?
It's a good question. There used to be: In the 1940s, the Kansas City City Directory listed 67 delicatessens operating in the metro, including the Milwaukee Deli, the Chicago Deli, the Cincinnati Deli and the New York Bakery and Delicatessen, which outlasted all of its rivals until it closed, somewhat uncermoniously, last year. It's now a flea market.
You need plans. Fat City has a recycle bin full of listings. In this post, all our problems are solved.
It's not often that you get to see a submarine commissioned in Kansas City. But that's the drill on Saturday as the Boulevard Brewery sponsors a live broadcast of the commissioning ceremony for the USS Missouri in Groton, CT on the Power & Light District's KC Live! Stage.
The festivities run from 9:30 a.m. to noon with breakfast and lunch specials, as well as plenty of limited edition merchandise. Boulevard has donated $1 for every barrel of beer sold in the state since May 1 in order to help fund the commissioning.

This exact same show happened a couple months ago at the Record Bar. (Well, almost. Switch Sons of Great Dane for the Builders and the Butchers, and you've got it.) Fortunately, that doesn't make the lineup any less awesome. Contrary to various rumors, Streetside Records' ridiculous sale signs do not mean they're closing. Unlike most record stores across America, they're alive and well. So well, in fact, that local MC Reach and DJ Ataxic are making an in-store appearance there on Saturday afternoon.
Update II (10:03 a.m. July 30): There are still more questions than answers about the reappearance of Larry Schnackenberg, the Lenexa man who disappeared for 20 days before being found Wednesday by a parks employee (who just happened to know Schnackenberg). His sons didn't have many answers for us yesterday during a press conference. But it sounds like their father hasn't even answered their questions.
"Although questions remain, we are simply enjoying the fact
that he's still in our lives," David Schnackenberg said yesterday during a press conference (via the Star).
