There were a lot of questions raised last week when a Kansas City teen on the run from the law opened fire inside a detention center. Namely, how the hell did he get a loaded gun into a prison? Now the Tyler, Texas police department has an answer: The cop that arrested him didn't bother checking the teen's luggage.
Officer Jessica Doughten arrested the
teen at as he arrived at a bus station, according to the Tyler
Morning Telegraph. Doughten, a two-year
veteran of the Tyler Police Department, searched the boy but didn't check his bags. Doughten has been suspended without pay, Police Chief Gary
Swindle said.
Doughten took the teen to the Smith County Juvenile Detention Center about an hour east of Dallas,
where the he grabbed the .357 revolver from his bag while being processed and started firing. The 16-year-old shot out windows in an attempt to escape and gashed himself on broken glass. Responding officers didn't return fire and convinced him to put the gun down.
Swindle told
the paper that his force got lucky. "Officers have been killed by guns and knives missed during searches in
the past, and thankfully that was not case here," he said.
The teen, who faces felony assault charges in Kansas City, was charged with aggravated assault on a public servant, possessing a deadly weapon in a penal institution and possession of pot ... which was also missed because the bags weren't searched.

Mother,
Welcome to Texas.
I'll grant you the officer missing the gun was stupid, but pulling a gun on officers doing their job is exponetially stupid. The officers showed great restraint (thank God they had good training) in not shootong yor kid, which would have been justified.
If my son broke a law in Kansas I would expect him to face the consequences in Kansas.
Your son deserves what he gets. Sorry lady, but you've raised a dilenquent, not a decent young man. The officer is a dipshit....no question about it. Don't blame her for your son behaving like an idiot. Apparently his dad should've beat his ass a bit more when he was at home. Children lacking discipline are always surprised when the real world makes them toe the line.
Your son is a danger to society and should be locked up.
Ben, I like how in your title you say "Teen got Officer suspended", its funny how my child can take the blame for someones else's gross negligence, and they are getting paid to do this everyday... Now I haven't seen one title in all of the 50 papers stating that Officer gets Runaway Teen 30-99 years for NOT doing her job... Now a job comes a dime a day, but my child life's is ruined for ever... Does he take some part of that, maybe he does, but he never would have had opportunity if the job was correctly done in the first place... Now detention officers life , my childs life, and the police officers life has all been put in danger..I called the police to help find my child, before he got off bus..He wasnt on the run from law, hell we didnt even know he had assault charge, which by the way was a fight at school with another student that family pressed charges. He has never been to jail a day in his life, but now he is Penitentiary bound? I put my faith in Tyler Police Department to bring my irrational child home, who was trying to be with his girlfriend who moved away to Texas. Did anyone no what he was thinking or what he had or if he had it.. All I know is, what could have went easy at first some how went so wrong.. So blame the kid, blame the parents, but never blame the person that is the supposed to be the trained one...
This is why I love the news, its sounds so good, but yet half the time is so wrong..
