On October 6, the U.S. Supreme Court will listen to attorneys from the Westboro Baptist Church argue that their homophobic church's protest Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew
Snyder's funeral in 2006 is protected by the First Amendment.
The fallen Marine's father, Albert Snyder, sued Phelps and his church for
picketing
the funeral and won a a $5 million judgment (the Phelpses won on
appeal with the court
ordering Snyder to pay Phelps $16,510 for court costs). Now, the U.S.
Supreme Court will determine
whether the First Amendment protects Phelps' speech. But don't look for the Phelps family to pander to the court.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
The purpose of the First Amendment is to protect that speech that the mob hates. It was put in place by the very God that YOU hate! The creator of this world, HE who holds the very breath of your miserable lives in HIS hands! That God that you defy and flip off and that God that is going to cause the very land to vomit you out!

Wasn't the first amendment originally to protect the free speech of citizens speaking against the government? That's the way I read it. The Phelp's clan have no case.
