Miss Riot Room and four more events to witness this weekend.

1. HIt the Crossroads. That's right -- it's First Friday again, so walk around in the heat and look at some art.

2. Put on some ruby slippers. Not those ruby slippers, but the bold ballet footwear that inspired the title of the super-influential film The Red Shoes, re-mastered and showing at the Tivoli for one week only.

3. Put your dog in a pageant. The many things happening at Saturday's Independence Animal Fair include contests for the ugliest and prettiest dog.

4. Hope your sister doesn't win a pageant -- if it's the Miss Riot Room

competition, happening Saturday night. Actually, being related to

official scene royalty might not be so bad, depending on how she fares

in the event's "sleaze category."

5. Look up. Heritage Park in Olathe is a favorite spot for the Kansas City Kite Club on Second Sundays. Some of the group's more intense members are apt to toss up insane contraptions that will make you think aliens are landing.
