Hooker, Oklahoma, knows its name is hilarious

  • It's rare to see a hooker's chamber of commerce without paying first.

The best thing about Hooker, Oklahoma, besides the name Hooker, Oklahoma, is that the citizens seem as proud as can be about hailing from the town named for the world's oldest profession.

When it comes to naming businesses, Hookerites take the George-Foreman-Christening-a-kid strategy: only one name will do.

So, here's the Hooker Chamber of Commerce. And then here's so much more, as captured by your Crap Archivist on a trip through Hooker last week.

This makes sense. I mean, the job demands a certain level of fitness.

Oklahoma is anti-socialist country. Here we see the can-do attitude that will keep the OK elderly afloat when Medicare dies.

Is this the local newspaper and print shop . . .

hookeradvance.jpg

. . . or a payday loan place run by pimps?

I think this next one used to be a Cirilla's.

Like many old downtowns, Hooker's main drag is steeped in nostalgia.

Here, you can grab a soda and remember the Hooker of the more innocent past, back when it truly meant something to give a tugjob for drug money.

Most Hooker businesses prominently include the town's name in their signage. That's cool. I doubt I would do the same if I ran the bingo hall in Whore, Kansas, or JERKU4CASH, Missouri.

But one business on Hooker's main drag shies from its heritage:

All kidding aside, this omission was likely for the best.

I actually think that the town and the actual "hooker" got the name from thomas "hooker" the town was named after him and he brought in female companionship for the men there... they were called hooker's girls, then later just hookers. I don't know if it is true or not, just another story I heard.

my husband has several shirts from there. One says "All my friends are hookers", "Support your local hookers" and another completely innappropriate to wear to church (even under your dress shirt) saying. It is all in good fun and I find it funny when I tell people my grandparents used to live in Beaver, but then moved to Hooker. yep, thats funny

Both my kids "graduated from Hooker High" (daughter said it sounded like a bad "b" movie). When she matriculated into Oklahoma City University, she was asked to introduce herself, tell her hometown, and say what she wanted members of her college class to remember about her in four years. She groaned and I told her to beat them to the punch. So she introduced herself, said Hooker, OK, was her hometown, and that she wanted everyone to remember that Hooker was her hometown and not her profession. Everyone lost it!! You have to know that OCU is a United Methodist University and her dad was the pastor of Hooker United Methodist Church at the time!

Why not mention how Hooker actually got its name? Per Hooker History, the town got its name from John (Hooker) Threlkeld

Why not really say how Hooker got it's name? Per the book Hooker History, the town got its name from a man by the name of John (Hooker) Threlkeld.

Hooker is a great "all american" town...no pun intended there! When we first moved there my dad was so proud to say "now my daughters are hookers!". Guess we have to have a sense of humor to live there. Not a bad place, Go Lady Dogs and Hooker Horny Toads...and don't forget, right down the road is Beaver, OK Home of the Beaver Dusters!!! yes, i said it...

I visited Hooker OK in 2009 and loved the brick streets. Enjoyed the drive through both the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandle and popped into Liberal Kansas. Now my niece wants to visit Texas so back to Amarillo and and also do the OK Panhandle and will stop in Hooker.

Hey, get a checking account at the historical "First National Bank of Hooker," and you, too, can ask, "Will you take a Hooker check?"

I treasure my original "Hooker Reunion 1989" T-shirt. (Took my mother to her reunion.) Have great memories of that town.

That's interesting, Thomas. Kansas likewise has a rich history of full-blooded socialist politics, especially back around the 1890s and early twentieth century . . . although this would be news to most Kansans! Is this history well known in Oklahoma?
Also, I wrote "anti-scoialist" based on some hilarious anti-Obama talk I heard in a gas station just outside of Hooker!

Historically, Oklahoma isn't anti-socialist country; it had the largest socialist party in the US at the beginning of the 1900s. It's not really surprising, given Oklahoma's agrarian/labor roots. Stillwater maybe even had a socialist mayor. Of course, in recent history, Oklahoma has gravitated significantly toward the Republican party, and so could be called anti-socialist in that respect.

Just to add to the fun, I live in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. About an hour away is a town named Dildo! Now if a man from Dildo got together with woman from Hooker . . .

Of course, the town was NOT named for the oldest profession but for a cowboy who was talented at "hooking" a calf out of a herd and earned the nickname, "Hooker." And the best thing about Hooker, Oklahoma is the great people who live there.

I graduated from school in Hooker. I remember seeing a bus-load of girls going down the highway to an out of town event. On the side of the bus (full of young girls)...it said "Hooker Activity Bus". I didn't know that was funny till about five years ago.
