  • Gary Miller didn't make it far before the law caught up with him.

Alleged car thief Gary Lyle Miller, who escaped Ray County Correctional Facility in Henrietta early this morning, has been apprehended.

At about 1 a.m., the 35-year-old broke out of the jail by kicking a off an air duct vent, crawling through it into an unsecured area, and walking out the door.

Ray County Sheriff Samuel Clemens says Miller was picked up not long after 10 a.m. when he broke into a home roughly three miles southwest of Henrietta.

The resident heard him entering the home and called 911. He was unarmed

and still in his prison-issued orange jumpsuit when police arrived, and

he didn't harm the homeowner.

"The mosquitoes had bitten him up pretty bad," Clemens says, but

otherwise Miller was uninjured.

Miller had been at the jail

since Monday and was awaiting transfer to Arkansas or another state to

face motor theft charges on Tuesday. He wasn't picked up because the

driver for the transport company quit.

Ironically, the transport arrived this morning to pick him and other

inmates up, but he's going to stick around Missouri for a while longer.

Clemens says Miller will remain in his custody and face a felony charge

for escape and other charges that haven't been determined yet.
