McMansion permits losing value as school enrollment predictor

Before home sales went into the tank, school officials in Johnson County used new housing permits to try predict their incoming enrollments.

Headcounts have come trickier to guess in the new economy. Relying on housing permits as a guide, Blue Valley schools administrators underestimated the 2009-'10 enrollment by 250 students. District officials believe that more families are doubling up or living in apartments.



"We had a surprise," deputy superintendent Al Hanna tells Sun Publications.

School officials in Johnson County are still using housing permits as as guide. Blue Valley expects more students this year, in part because new permits are up from 2009.

Though subdivisions may not be replicating in their previously sci-fi manner, parents still want to send their kids to schools in Johnson County. Olathe is anticipating 500 more students this year, according to the Sun's Way We Live Now story.

They probably share more bedrooms.
