Douglas Heck, sardine-smearing ex-husband, will not have child support reduced

  • An ex-husband's bag of tricks included sardines.

A St. Joseph man who taunted his alimony-starved ex-wife by sending her pictures of $100 bills has lost a bid to have his child support reduced.

Douglas Heck waged a campaign of intimidation and harassment after separating from the mother of his three children in 2008. Stephanie Heck testified at a trial in Andrew County last fall that he disconnected the battery cables on her car and applied a coat of Vaseline, mustard, brown sugar and sardines to the doors and sidewalks of her workplace.

Heck also threatened his wife, warning in a text message that if she received sole custody of the children, "you'll never live through the night."

For Heck, the dead fish and threats of bodily harm were not the real turn-ons, though. What really put a daisy in this guy's peehole was to withhold money from his ex-wife.

In a stream of e-mails and text messages, Heck said he was hiding assets and planning to earn as little money as possible during the dissolution proceedings. He twice sent his wife images of cash, according to the court record. "When you are broke, I will take the kids," Heck wrote in a 2009 text message.

Heck made $126,234 in 2007 and $99,758 in 2008. He offered no evidence of an income in 2009.

The trial judge, as you might imagine, was not too impressed with Heck. The court ruled that he "purposefully engaged in conduct designed to avoid meeting his earning potential." In other words, Heck sat on his ass in order to avoid paying child support.

The court ordered Heck to pay $1,830 per month and unpaid child care bill of $1,900.

Heck found a lawyer to file an appeal. On Tuesday, the Court of Appeals in western Missouri upheld the lower court's ruling. The appeals court said the trial judge was correct to base Heck's child support on the money he was making before he decided to act like a superjerk (paraphrasing here). The appeals court also denied Heck's point that the $1,900 bill was duplicated by an award of retroactive child support.

Time to pick those Ben Franklins off the counter and get them in the mail, Dougie.
