This Monday, Shirley Phelps-Roper struck a deal that stopped her from going to trial on charges of disturbing the peace and negligent child abuse. Losing the disturbing the peace thing, that I can live with. But, oh, how good would it have felt to finally - finally - have an excuse to get child services involved because negligent child abuse is probably just the tip of the iceberg.
Phelps-Roper avoided the trial by doing what all psychotic or wealthy or good-lawyer-having people do: treat the justice system like a business deal where criminal charges are just offers to be negotiated.
See, what you do is, you do something truly fucked up like protest a serviceman's funeral in Nebraska in 2007. Then when you get busted for being an asshole and probably scarring your defenseless children for life with your sociopath-religious-famewhoring, you turn right around and slap Nebraska authorities with a federal lawsuit claiming malicious prosecution. Here your asshole cup runneth over because your defense sort of assumes that everyone hates you because you are such a dick and everyone knows you are a dick. Or something. I didn't go to law school. But I know from assholes.
And the ordeal ends on the day you're supposed to go to trial because Nebraska wants you to drop your lawsuit so they drop theirs too.
Again, the big loss here was really the opportunity to get young impressionable minds away from these people. I'd give anything for a chance to get one of the junior Phelps on the stand and curl the juror's hair, but life is sad sometimes.

Why hasn't Mr. Phelps been brought up on abuse charges long before now? His children are talking, why is anyone not listening and barring ALL minor children from within 500 feet of this idiot?
In allowing her children to associate with him, Shirley Phelps Roper puts her children in serious danger emotionally, even if he is to old to beat on little kids and women anymore.
