It's been a fun ride, K2 synthetic marijuana. Since your innocent beginnings in Kansas, we've smoked you, watched politicians and cops flog you, seen the cycle repeat in every new state you sprung up in until finally The Washington Post was discussing whether you were a public health menace and Mancow and Tom Green were smoking you live on air.
Maybe you won't be missed much. New, barely legal products are already on the way. Truly though, this is the end of an era. So what do you do and where do you go in the last 24 hours of uncontrolled JWH synthetic cannabinoids? You party, motherfucker.
Micah Riggs, owner of the Coffee Wonk on 35th and Broadway, is planning a farewell bash for the best incense ever some time tonight at a secret location. Not too secret though. Just stop by the store and ask and they'll tell you when and where.
"We're calling it the 'Great Midwest Burnout.' We're going to have live music, and it'll be a free show," Riggs says. "The party goes till 11:59 p.m. and we'll have the stuff [K2] out half an hour early."
You won't be without chemically altered fun for long. At exactly midnight, Riggs will announce new incenses to take K2's place.
"They're all pretty similar to K2. All of these should be legal, though," he says. "We're testing out new ones but so far we have four solid ones to start out with. I don't smoke myself, I try to stay objective about it, but we have testers."
Don't expect Riggs to give away his stash just because he can't sell it in Missouri. He's already readying a new store in Florida to sell his remaining stock.
Business owners who don't have another store to ship to are just trying to clear out the remaining stock, like Pam Weber of Pam's Scentsational Scents at Westport and Main.
"It's been crazy all week, just insane this whole week with people buying it up while they can," Weber says. "We only have so much inventory left, and I'll be open late and if have to give it away to get rid of it that's what I'll do. I'm done with this stuff. If this is a controlled substance, I'm done with it. I'm going on a vacation. I hear they're coming out with new stuff, but when that happens there's a whole 'nother party about to start."
