Mexico, Missouri goat, of Facebook glory, gets lassoed

Update: Mervin Beechy, the goat-whisperer, accepted my friend request. Via status update, he advises that "Billy Goat Gruff is now safe from stun guns, cars, kids w/rocks, thunderstorms, etc..."

Original story:

For 12 days, there's been a goat roaming around Mexico, Missouri! Can you believe that? A goat! (Meanwhile in real Mexico, more than 300 goats have been beheaded in the past 50 days by an unknown predator.)

But it's good to be in America, because while the slaughtered Mexico-Mexico goats have yet to receive a single Facebook memorial, the Mexico, Missouri goat has been nicknamed, videotaped, and fanned on Facebook by almost 10,000 people in less than a week. U-S-A!

Animal control officers have been chasing "Billy Goat Gruff" since August 21, but according to the Columbia Daily Tribune, he was finally caught yesterday by some dude named Mervin Beechy. Beechy apparently spotted the goat, chased him while on horseback for a quarter of a mile, and lassoed the animal.

Like the old adage goes, a lasso is mightier than virtual fandom: Mervin Beechy is on Facebook, but his friend count is a whopping zero. (Beechy ignored my friend request for comment.)

As for the goat, officials don't know yet what to do with it. They're waiting for its owner to come forward to claim the goat. At least 10 people have called in to claim the beloved animal.
