In the second quarter of last night's Chiefs-Packers preseason game, team owner Clark Hunt made his way to the broadcast booth to talk about all the exciting things happening at Arrowhead Stadium in 2010.
It was a strange sight, and not just because color man Trent Green made Hunt look like he shops in the junior department. What made the visit weird was the fact that Hunt was in the booth just six days earlier, during the Chiefs-Eagles tilt, to talk about exciting things happening at Arrowhead.
It was like watching the president give a prime-time speech on Monday and then on Friday. Hey, man, glad you're on top of things. But, um, isn't "CSI:NY" supposed to be on now?
Hunt's ultravisibility is part of an effort to generate excitement in a team that would really like to beat Oakland at home. The entire preseason, really, is a giant commercial. The Chiefs use the games to wallpaper the availability of tickets for the regular season. Meanwhile, KCTV, which owns the rights to the exhibition season, wants you to contemplate the squareness of Brad Stephens' jaw in between second stringer Brodie Croyle's pass plays.
The Plog sports desk watched much of the game with the sound down. We went looking for the mute button during the pregame, at about the time sideline man Michael Coleman "reported" that the rain that fell might prevent the skill players from making crisp cuts on the turf.
Moisture = slippery. Got it.
