Are the Scientologists outsourcing their stress tests? Portfolio.com, the site that just won't stop cranking out city rankings, tested the stress levels of the entire nation. Thankfully, it had nothing to do with Dianetics

The site's list names St. Louis the 5th most-stressed U.S. city. We Kansas Citians are 9th from the bottom, which is a good thing for once. But how can the populace of our easterly sister city be so much more stressed than us?

For their methodology, Portfolio.com used factors like unemployment, finances, health, weather, pollution, crime and traffic to determine each city's stress level. Turns out that it only seems like we have a lot in common with Cardinals fans.

A few key differences:

  • St. Louis' unemployment rate is 9.9 percent. Ours is 8.5 percent.
  • They had 40.3 murders per 100,000 people in 2009. We had 20.6
  • St. Louis is sunny 57 percent of the year. Us? Sixty percent!

Detroit ranked No. 1 most-stressed. If Portfolio.com were to rank cities according to how often they're shat upon by websites that rank cities, it would be No. 1 there, too.

Salt Lake City is No. 50 on the list, probably because religion is the opiate of the masses. Meanwhile, Denver beat us for the 7th least-stressed ranking because everyone in Denver is stoned.

Stay tuned for Portfolio.com's next ranking, which will probably have something to do with cities and flatulence. C'mon, guys, let's be number one!
