When U.S. Rep. Roy Blunt (R-K Street) looks at the polls that like his chances of becoming a senator, he can taste his foot in the back of his mouth.
Blunt will participate in only two debates with his opponent, Robin Carnahan (D-Legacy), retreating from an earlier suggestion to give Missourians all the rhetorical tangling they could ever want or need. In early August, Blunt told Carnahan that he was up for a six-match beat-box and deficit-elimination contest.
With not much else going for her but a brand name and a fake fight with Fox News, Carnahan is calling Blunt a coward. Carnahan says she has agreed to all of Blunt's terms, including his idea that they duel on Meet the Press and Fox News Sunday.
The two candidates will meet instead on much smaller stages. On October 14, Blunt and Carnahan will debate at KCPT-TV in Kansas City and in Lake Ozark the following day.
The Blunt campaign says the debate-o-rama could not happen for "various reasons." Team Blunt notes that it challenged Carnahan on February 21, 2009, a presumptuous idea, given that voters did not narrow the down exciting choices for U.S. senator for another 18 months.
