Dallas Smith created and designed "a white, cone-shaped mask" in his first-grade art class at Winfield-Scott Elementary School in Fort Scott, Kansas. He wasn't forced to wear the mask, which looks a lot like a Ku Klux Klan hood.

Before we totally freak out, Smith is 6 years old. He also happens to be black. Nevertheless, when Barry Smith saw his son's mask, he was "outraged" according to KSHB Channel 41's report. He confronted the school's principal, who apologized as did the school's superintendent.

After hearing from the art teacher in KSHB's report, I really don't

think there's anything malicious going on here. That said, the teacher should have taken one look at the mask and realized, uh, maybe a different shape would be better.

Smith and his wife are pulling their son out of the school and transferring him to a school in Pittsburg, Kansas.

So what do you think? Is it a Klan hood? Or did the teacher just not realize that this might be offensive?

Poor Pittsburg school system...I can see it now. The little guy is going to come home from school, and he'll show his parents the "A" (with a circle around it)that he got on his test...but drama queen dad will accuse them of promoting Anarchy!

My parents were born in the 30s and grew up in the segregated South. They told me about the real pain they endured at the hands of those who wore the real hoods. It is pathetic to see today that an innocent act from a child and a caring, well-meaning teacher could bring out such utter weakness from his parents. There needs to be some (in)sensitivity training alright: Mom & Dad. They need to just lighten-up (oopsI think I just offended them again with another racist comment).

This really posses me off... Because African Americans take every chance they get to make something racist.... Now if tue school told the kid to make it then thats a diffret story but I guarantee they did not..... People see something racist and they see dollar signs

How stupid is this really? He is 6 for goodness sakes! And I bet he was really proud of the mask he designed! To me it could be a knights helmet or Santa's hat and beard.

I think that people now a days think the worst about everything ! This poor boy was so proud of his little mask .If you saw the news the boy was crying .Poor baby, he was just making art. Even the teacher didn't understand how this mask had made his parents so mad ! Why can't we just have peace and kindness . Not all people have hate on the brain !

Agree Mike. The parent's have totally projected intentions onto the school and the teacher that were not there. As well as deny the fact it was their child's own innocent idea. He colored it with crayons for Pete's sake. Their ignorance and bad attitude is what is to blame.

I'm sure Dallas is learning a lot from this project.

Important lessons like: If you you make the wrong thing in art class, your parents may move you away from all of your friends. And, it's OK to call other people insensitive and then respond with knee-jerk reaction that upsets a child's life.

Klan hood or not, I'm still trying to understand how this is the school's fault. It would be one thing if they'd told him to make a white, cone-shaped hat. But from what's posted here, it was entirely his own idea.

I don't have much use for the public school system, but let's keep our criticisms in the realm of reality, OK?
