Fire tore through Mama's 39th Street Diner early this morning, and the blaze was so bad that firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof to let the heat escape.
The fire broke out around 12:45 a.m., filling the diner with high pressure smoke that had firefighters fearing a "flash-bang," according to KSHB Channel 41.
Mama's was closed at the time of the fire. However, the neighboring Missie B's was open but escaped without damage.
The extent of the damage to Mama's is unknown. Also damaged was a
barber shop.
You gotta feel bad for Jan Imber and Ira Auerbach, who put in a ton of
work to fix up the old Nichols Lunch, the independently owned, 24-hour
midtown diner that closed after 85 years. Imber and Auerbach moved the Bell Street Mama's to the location in July
2007.
Pitch food critic Charles Ferruzza raved about the renovations in
a January 2008 review ("Respect
Your Mama's").
