Kansas gubernatorial hopeful Sam Brownback's moratorium on talking about his former roommate and one-time fan of gay execution legislation Lou Engle didn't last long.
Just a couple of days after Brownback's camp said the senator wouldn't talk about his awkward relationship with the kooky Kansas City-based founder of TheCall, Brownback discussed his feelings about Engle after a debate last night but didn't really say anything.
The topic came up mostly because Kansas Democrats (both of them) have
been kicking up concerns about Brownback's time living with Engle in
Washington, D.C., and the preacher's, um, strange notions like we're
going to have a big ol' civil war over abortion in this country.
Following a debate in Topeka last night, The Washington Post reports
Brownback said Kansans should know that "Lou said things that I don't
agree with." He didn't bother to elaborate if those were things like "Avatar
was James Cameron's greatest work" or calling homosexuality a
"spirit of lawlessness."
And in a weak effort to separate himself from Engle, Brownback chose to
do so temporally rather than ideologically. "I haven't talked to him in
months," he said. See? There's nothing to be concerned about then.
According to The Post, Libertarian candidate Andrew Gray didn't say
anything about the Brownback-Engle connection, and legally challenged Reform candidate Ken
Cannon said in his closing statements that he had been taught to
not hang around with hatemongers. Democratic candidate Tom Holland
wasn't at the debate because he was out closing the 37-point gap
between him and Brownback. Which, his running mate, Kelly Kultala, says
is totally
possible.
Holland's campaign manager did release a statement comparing Engle to
his Kansas lunatic counterweight Fred Phelps, saying:
"Nobody would condone a politician saying they're troubledby "some"
statements by Fred Phelps. The main difference between Lou Engle and
Fred
Phelps is that only Engle has been roommates with Sam Brownback."
Here's the super-scary ads the Democrats made to attack Brownback:
