It's barely been a year since a KU student was raped in her dorm room at Oliver Hall. Those who followed coverage of that case might remember that just before the assault, Kansas Attorney General Steve Six held a safety forum on the campus to raise awareness of sexual assault since -- not counting the Oliver Hall rape and Wednesday night's incident -- there have been 13 rapes reported in Lawrence and Manhattan since 2001. Then this August there was another rape at the Delta Chi fraternity house. All together, that brings us to at least 16 rapes in nine years.
And while the so-called "Waldo rapist" gets all of the press, FOX 4 only passingly reported in their coverage of what happened at Oliver Hall that police believed most of the rapes to have been "committed by the same person." Of course there's no evidence yet that would suggest this latest rape is in any way connected to the KU rapist. Just to be clear, the Oliver Hall incident wasn't connected to those serial rapes either. There's also no outraged Facebook pages, or pudgy white dudes following black guys home with guns either, so perhaps it's all for the best.
Thomas had one more quote in her KCTV5 interview. "We've had multiple incidents like this and I think it's time to actually try to do something about it," she said.
The only thing to disagree with there is that the time to actually try to do something is ideally before people got used to the idea of being raped on campus.
