UPDATE: A KMBC report says Akbar Rana, the gas-station clerk charged with shooting and killing Frederick C. Jones Jr., has fled the country. Crime Scene KC confirmed the story with Jones' mother.
Frederick C. Jones Jr.'s parents told reporters yesterday that their son suffered from schizophrenia and self-medicated with alcohol but the 21-year-old was harmless and his shooting death was senseless.
"He killed my baby for no reason," Jones' mother, Vanessa Boykin, said (via Crime Scene KC). "They knew him by name, and they knew he had a problem."
"It just didn't have to happen the way it happened," Frederick Jones Sr. added.
Jones' parents spoke out as prosecutors announced charges against 33-year-old Akbar Rana,
the convenience store clerk accused of shooting and killing Jones in
the parking lot of the Shell gas station at 5501 Bannister Road on
September 3.
Jones, a panhandler, was told to leave the store, but he refused. Fox 4
reports that another clerk pushed Jones out of the store but the two
fell to the ground. Rana then used a stun gun on Jones, who punched Rana
in the neck and tried to run away. That's when Rana allegedly shot
Jones in the back.
A wounded Jones was found in the gas station's parking lot around 6:54 p.m.,
and he later died at a local hospital.
Rana is not in custody, KCTV5 reports.
