UPDATE: Syah D. Duffey, the 2-year-old who an Amber Alert was issued for on Thursday, has been found safe in Iowa with her father. But the story is definitely a strange one. Read the update after the jump ...

It's hard not to feel your heart sink when you hear a story like this one. Syah D. Duffey, a 2-year-old Cassy County girl, was abducted this morning.

KMBC Channel 9 reports

that an Amber Alert has been issued for Duffey after a heavy set white

woman in a dirty white van with Iowa license plates allegedly kidnapped

Duffey from 202 Broadway in East Lynne around 8:30 a.m.

The suspect is believed to be in her twenties or thirties and was last seen wearing a gray sweater and blue jeans. That's all we know about the suspect so far.

Duffey's clothes are described as a Mickey Mouse shirt and blue jeans.

If you've seen Duffey or have information about her disappearance, call 911 or the the Cass County Sheriff's Office at 816-380-5200.

UPDATE: Troopers with the Iowa State Highway Patrol found Syah Duffey when they stopped a white van matching the suspect vehicle's description near Mitchellville, Iowa, around 5:45, according to KMBC Channel 9. Duffey was safe with two people -- one of them her father, James Guyer.

Here's where the story takes a strange turn: Guyer claimed he went to get his daughter after seeing a picture that made it look like the little girl was smoking.

Authorities say the woman who took Duffey tricked the girl's mother, Sharon Duffey, by saying she was with social services with the authority to take the girl. Sharon Duffey willingly handed her daughter over. Why would she give her daughter to a stranger? The woman's mother, Karrie Ratkewicz, told KMBC that her daughter has "got some problems, and they know that. And I think that's why they done that."

The Star reports that Sharon Duffey is "mildly mentally disabled" and "easily misled."

Mike Russo of Fathers For Justice told KMBC's sister station in Des Moines, KCCI-TV, that Guyer sought his group out. Russo gave some perspective on the father's side of the story.
"At no time did she say she was from DFS or we're here to take your kid.

What happened was, it was pre-arranged between Jim and the mother,

Sharon, because Jim didn't want to get in trouble. He was actually

working under the advice of DFS, they said if she hands over the kid

we'll not even get involved," said Russo. "Here we've got a guy who is

really done nothing wrong but try to protect his child and we've wasted

resources, huge resources on a child that's not really been abducted."

No word on charges yet.
