Meerkat Manor probably has a few folks wanting the little creatures as pets. No, you don't. Just ask the guy who stole a meerkat from the Kansas City Zoo last Thursday and dumped it off at an Overland Park Petco the next day.

Overland Park police are looking for the guy who ditched the meerkat at the pet store.

Witnesses saw a man wearing a hat, hoodie and jeans walk up to the store and leave the glass aquarium. Petco employees found the meerkat inside and called police. Not an animal they're used to dealing with.

I'd like to know how someone got a meerkat out of the zoo.

Why get rid of such a cute creature? They are really crappy pets whose bites can become infected. They also stink, and police say they "will scent-mark their owner and the house (their 'territory')." Haha.

Also, since meerkats like to stick in packs, police say "they may become hysterical if kept as single pets."

If you know who swiped the meerkat, give the chief animal control officer Eric Thompson a call at 913-895-6279 or e-mail him at eric.thompson@opkansas.org.

The meerkat was returned to the zoo on Saturday.
