Kansas City coach Todd Haley just had to go and ruin the heat he put on the Chiefs-Broncos rivalry.
Haley (halfheartedly) apologized yesterday for snubbing Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels during
the post-game handshake after the Chiefs got a 49-29 whoopin'. "The Snub" was a classless move for sure -- and as several people pointed out, a hypocritical one -- but it sparked interest in a dormant rivalry.
Both fan bases were fired up, looking forward to a rematch. And then Haley apologized.
"It sounds like it's become a big deal and I do want to apologize for me
not shaking Josh's hand after the game," Haley told reporters
yesterday. "I do believe in doing what's right and that was not right.
Probably let the emotions of the situation get me too much. And I
apologize. I apologize to the fans and to Denver and to Josh."
In Haley's post-game presser, he said what he told McDaniels during the snub was "private." However, Haley didn't bother to call McDaniels to personally apologize.
"I felt like, again, communicating to the majority, and anybody that was
watching it, to let them know how I felt and I think that's what's
important," he said.
Way to half-ass it.
Haley again refused to explain what set him off.
"I don't think that's necessary to get into it," he said. "I think it's
very necessary that I let everybody know that I would do that over again
at the end, and it wasn't the right thing to do."
We can only speculate on what angered up Haley's blood. Was it running up the score? Throwing the ball late? Not letting up on D with a 32-point lead? The wicked hit Tony Moeaki took during an onsides kick? The Broncos celebrating too much? Did McDaniels try to stink-palm Haley? No one knows.
The Associated Press took audio from Fox 4 and figured out what Haley said, and it doesn't offer much insight.
"There's a lot of [expletive] being talked about you."Yeah, and there's a lot of shit being talked about Haley too.
