Kansas State unafraid to meet Duke because 'It's not like we're Mount St. Mary's'

We're going to find out just how good the Kansas State Wildcats are tonight when the No. 4 ranked team in the nation takes on No. 1 Duke in the championship game of the CBE Classic at the Sprint Center.

The game is sold out and if you believe ex-Kansas City Star sports reporter and current Yahoo Sports writer Jason King: "Kansas State can beat top-ranked Duke." You may not have to believe him. Just look at last night's win.

K-State rained threes -- and hell -- on No. 18 Gonzaga on the way to an 81-64 victory. The thought of taking on the best team in the land didn't frighten Kansas State coach Frank Martin, who dropped an amazing quote.

"I'm not going to try to prepare them by saying, 'Hey, we're playing Duke,'" Martin said. "We play in the Big 12. We played Kansas (in 2008) when they were No. 2 in the country with seven pros on their team, and beat them. We played Texas last year when they were ranked No. 1 and beat them.

"It's not like we're Mount St. Mary's. We've played these kinds of games before."

Come March, K-State better hope they don't draw the Mountaineers. That's bulletin board material.

As for Duke, the Blue Devils held off a Marqutte rally for an 82-77 victory.

If you weren't lucky enough to score tickets to the game, you can watch it at 9:15 tonight on ESPN2.

WOW, did he really say that? Well to the Mount players this is motivation. Go ahead and win the conference and get that automatic bid and do work. This is pathetic for a coach to say this about another team. If he was to look at the past schedules he would see that the mount plays a very tough schedule year in year out. I really want to see how the present mount players react to this comment on the court. Go Mountaineers

In addition to the above, the Mount is also known for having coaches with class, from Hall of Famer Jim Phelan, to Milan Brown (now at Holy Cross) to present day Robert Burke. I dare say the Frank Martin I watch on the sidelines could never be hired at the Mount, where personal dignity matters.

I wouldn't pick on the Mount if I were you. Coach Jim Phelan set the bar after coaching 49 years, 830 wins over 1300 games. Are we heavily recruited by the NBA, No, we're heavily recruited by the FBI, Big 8 accounting firms, Lockheed, Northrup-Grumman and NSA. Considering how many college players make it to the NBA you might want to consider this fact: 96% of our grads are employed or in grad school within a year of graduation, 63% walk across the stage to get their diploma knowing they already have a job. We might be small but we're mighty big where it counts.

Frank Martin, watch yourself. The Mount is not a force to taken likely nor to be made the blunt of a joke. Mounties are everywhere and anywhere. They are more passionate about basketball and their university than your university could possibly ever be. While they may be one of the smallest schools in Division I basketball, they (and their fans) have more heart than most in the game. Do you remember the game during The Big Dance in March 2008 when The Mount played North Carolina? In a place full of 50,000 people, less than 200 of them were Mount fans. And they were the LOUDEST in the place. You better hope that the mountaineers don't make it the march madness.

That could work in two directions, but i'm sure he intended it to be a crass and lowbrow comment towards Mount St Mary's. Good luck with your crass and lowbrow attitude.

@Eric, you're right. I was looking at the number ESPN had next to it on the box score. I've since fixed it.
