1. It's the last first Friday of the year! That means this is your final chance to experience a First Friday art crawl in the Crossroads during 2010. The awesomeness on the agenda includes -- of course -- visual art exhibitions, such as F-- X-mas at the Keyhole Gallery. Also: Hustle over to the Fishtank Performance Studio for local actors like David Wayne Reed reading from their actual teenage diaries.
2. Want more art? Go to college! The Kansas City Art Institute holds its end-of-semester show and sale today through Sunday. You can pay for your favorite piece any time throughout the weekend, but it has to remain on display 'til the show's over.
3. Assuming there's still money burning a hole in your pocket that you'd like to unload on local creative people, hit up the Holiday Honeypot Shop on Saturday at River Market Event Space. You might recognize the bee theme as a hallmark of the local events group known as Wedding Hive. Rest assured, this weekend's holiday market is for everyone, not just the soon-to-be committed-for-life.
4. When you gather around the fire with your family later this month, you're gonna need something to say to the redneck relation. It helps if you have something to bond over, like the comedic style of Larry the Cable Guy. Lucky for you, he's wearing his flannel shirt to the Independence Events Center on Saturday. If you waste this opportunity, Aunt Ida will keep on thinking you're a snoot with no respect for her husband's blue collar. (Then again, if you go, next year you're guaranteed a Git R Done shirt for Christmas.)
5. Meanwhile, the Folly Theater will be crowded with famous ladies. Tonight through Sunday, Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland and Tina Turner are all taking turns at the mic for 12 Divas of Christmas. Yes, we know that Marilyn and Judy were laid to rest decades ago. Female impersonator Christopher Peterson is channeling their spirits for this show presented by the Heartland Men's Chorus.
