If you've been debating whether or not to get a dog for the holidays, now's the time to do it. And I mean right now, like right this second, because there are a shitload of dogs about to be killed if they don't get homes very soon.
In the last week, Halfway Homes Pet Adoptions has been flooded with animals -- many of which are perfectly good dogs given up by their homes for financial reasons. Some will be put down if they don't get them a home by Friday morning, others have until 8 a.m. Monday unless a rescue group can come in or someone adopts them. Some of the critical ones are only six months old. Come on, people. What the shit! Get a dog. They're pure love!
I'm not asking anything of you I don't demand of myself. I've rescued a dog. He's adorable. I'm probably going to get him a brother this weekend. Come on, guys.
These aren't some damaged animals. These are quality pets. If you go to the Petfinder listings, you'll see that many are housebroken. They get along well with others. They're affectionate. The listings will tell you which dogs are under the gun. You don't even have to get them their shots or get them fixed since it's already been done for almost all of them.
Oh, is money a problem? No, it's not. The dogs are $15. That's practically what most of you spend on lunch in this town to save a living thing that will repay you to the end of it's days with unquestioning love, affection and gratitude for its very existence..
Now that you know, it's on your head too. No, for real. Get a dog Kansas City. I will find you if you don't. They are adorable. I will fuck you up.
The shelter's open from noon to 6 p.m. today and you can call them at 816-921-0201.
And while we're on the subject, if you're not doing anything tonight, you should swing by Boozefish Wine Bar in Westport between 4 and 8 p.m. They're holding a Take A Pet Home For the Holidays benefit, and donations will go towards Animal Haven.
OK, you've got your marching orders. Move, move, move, move!
