The first domino has dropped. Cliff Lee has signed with ... not the New York Yankees? Or the Texas Rangers? He signed with the Philadelphia Phillies Monday night -- almost a year after the franchise traded him because management didn't think they could afford to resign him. So much for that.
The Phillies adding another ace to baseball's best bullpen means the Yankees didn't get what they wanted. Texas also lost out. Does that mean the Yanks and Rangers will make a run at Greinke?
ESPN reported last night that "the Yankees haven't expressed much interest in trading for" Greinke, and "thee Rangers apparently don't match up with Kansas City in a potential trade." Will getting spurned by Lee change that? It may not matter. The Yanks and Rangers reportedly don't have the goods that Royals G.M. Dayton Moore wants.
Yes, two of the best franchises in baseball don't have anything one of the worst franchises would want. Mind boggling.
Not that the Yankees even want Greinke. New York Post baseball columnist Joel Sherman wrote on Twitter that the Yanks "just don't believe he can handle NY."
The leaders appear to be the Toronto Blue Jays and Washington Nationals. I've covered the Jays' before. According to the Washington Post, the Nationals are "aggressively pursuing" a trade for Greinke. But the roadblocks sound familiar: The Nationals don't believe they have enough assets to score Greinke.
I still wouldn't rule out the Yankees, especially after the Boston Red Sox spent a shit-ton of money in free agency, making them an early favorite in the American League. The Yankees aren't known for losing off-seasons.
H/T: SB Nation Kansas City.
