Thomas Jones gets loved on by the New York Times

In Saturday's edition of The New York Times, sports writer Greg Bishop gushed over the Kansas City Chiefs' Thomas Jones. The following day, the running back broke 10,000 career rushing yards in the team's win over the St. Louis Rams.

Jones is "thriving" in Kansas City, Bishop writes, and that's really saying something, considering that the 32-year-old Virginia native has shuffled through the rosters of five teams over 11 seasons. Kansas City agrees with him, it seems.

According to the NYT piece, Jones lives in a two-bedroom condo on the Plaza, demolishes a plate of wings and baked beans at Jack Stack on the regular, and likes ... us. He said so!

"People here love football," Jones said. "They care about each other. They work hard. This is the kind of place where I'm supposed to be."

(Remember how former Chiefs running back Larry Johnson whined about

Kansas City's dinky nightlife? Guess what, Larry -- no matter what club you go to, the beer tastes the same.)

Jones has one year left on his contract, and hasn't stayed in one place for more than three years. But he's a mentor to young, talented players like Jamaal Charles, with whom he lit the Plaza lights on Thanksgiving night. He told the NYT that it made him feel like Mick Jagger.

Today, Chiefs brass announced that they are nominating Jones for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award, the league's only nod to players for good works off the field, in the community. Looks like Jones is lovin' on KC, and KC is loving him right back.

Thomas Jones is one hell of a football player..he is a mentor to this young team..I really do believe the Chiefs wouldn't not be as mentally tough and probably wouldn't have th record they have if he wasn't on this team. I've followed my beloved Chiefs for many years and the first time in a loooooong time im very proud of this team. If they get a home playoff game I will be coming home to KC to witness this team do the impossible by so many sport skeptics...and that is WIN IT ALL!!!! GO CHIEFS GO!!!!!!!

I am so happy to see Thomas Jones receive the credit he deserves. He has contributed without fanfare to each of the five teams for which he has played, through his leadership and work ethic.

Thomas Jones is great. Jammal Charles wouldn't be as successful without Jones either. Glad KC picked him up.
