"What's a PoleCam?"

If you'd asked us yesterday, we probably would have assumed a PoleCam was something invented by Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis. But thanks to a video posted on Kansas City Police Chief James Corwin's blog, we now know that the PoleCam is an effective, if unsolicited, residential skylight-maker.

Check out the video -- the first in a series called "Why We Do What We Do" -- after the jump.

Don't get us wrong -- the KCPD deserves praise for its ongoing efforts in transparency via the 'net. But this video raises questions we didn't previously have about a device we hadn't previously known existed. Like, why isn't there a flashlight on that sucker? Attics are dark, right? And does anybody ever "borrow" the PoleCam for personal use? Like, to check out the cute female roommates who live in the apartment upstairs?

Or, if there's already a trapdoor in the ceiling that leads to the attic, why

can't you stick the PoleCam through that, instead of banging a new hole in the ceiling?

Sigh. Information is power ... except when ignorance is bliss.
