It could be bye-bye Blaine Gabbert for the Tigers.
A fourth-string Iowa freshman running back ran all over the Missouri Tigers on the way to a 27-24 win for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Iowa back Marcus Coker rushed for 219 yards and two touchdowns while filling in for injured and suspended Hawkeyes. Coker was good but two plays absolutely killed the Tigers -- and an interception and an overturned catch made all the difference.
With a 24-20 lead in the fourth quarter, Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert threw an ill-advised pass that was not only intercepted but returned 72 yards for a touchdown by Iowa's Micah Hyde.
Missouri's last gasp drive came down to a fourth-and-six at Iowa's 43-yard line. Gabbert threw a 10-yard pass to T.J. Moe that was initially ruled a catch. After a review, the catch was overturned and Iowa bled out the clock. So did the Tigers get screwed on the ruling? Depends on your definition of "indisputable evidence."
In the video below, skip to the 1:15 mark to see the play. It's hard to tell. The ball appears to be bobbling, but you can't really tell from this angle. If that's the case (and the officials didn't have a better angle), then the play on the field should stand. It didn't, and the Hawks went on to victory. It's a tough call to make. But if there's not the evidence to overrule the catch, you can't make that call.
This may not be the only loss the Tigers suffer. The Star reported that Gabbert and defensive end Aldon Smith will have decisions to make on whether to leave for the NFL. Neither gave any real clue after last night's game.
