Original Story (January 10): I realize you're going to read this in a hundred different places, but here goes. Vulture/hate preacher Fred Phelps has released a video thanking God for Jared Lee Loughner, the man suspected of killing six, critically injuring Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and wounding others. Phelps claimed that God was punishing them for laws against the Westboro Baptist Church and was sitting in the heavens "laughing at you in your affliction."
"Westboro Baptist Church prays for more shooters, more violent
veterans and more dead. Praise God for his righteous judgments in this
Earth. Amen."
Reprehensible? Yes. Surprising? Not at all. This is now a modern-day formality: Something horrible happens, and Topeka's Westboro Baptist Church spouts a bunch of hateful shit and then promises to picket the funeral. Yawn.
As I write this on Monday afternoon, the YouTube video has already been viewed more than 43,000 times with a somewhat astounding 47 likes (and 705 dislikes). The video is a reminder of the sad state of public discourse in this country.
Westboro is, of course, promising to picket the funerals of the six killed in the shooting, including 9-year-old Christina Green. Shirley Phelps-Roper told the Toronto Star that she didn't see anything wrong with picketing the young girl's funeral.
"They broke his moral compass. God has cursed America," she said. The church, most of whose members are Fred Phelps' many children and grandchildren, will picket Green's funeral because "she is not innocent. They corrupted her from the womb. God doesn't make mistakes."
So there's your obligatory Phelps/tragedy update. Keep in mind that the volatility of these pickets has intensified, including allegations that a double-amputee war vet stalked church members in a vehicle packed with guns and ammo in late 2010.
UPDATE: The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that Westboro won't picket Christina Taylor Green's funeral because they'll be doing talk radio shows, including Mike Gallagher's radio program, "The Steve Sanchez Show" on KXXT-AM in a Phoenix suburb and CFNY-FM, 102.1 "The Edge" in
Toronto.
Shirley Phelps-Roper told the Cap-Journal that being on Gallagher's show will allow her to spread Westboro's message to 10 million people. Doesn't everyone already know their message of God hates [insert noun here]?

Wow....I've never really hated anyone before this guy and his group ( I will never ever call it a church) came into notoriety. He deserves the death that he preaches and teaches. It's really interesting that as I read thru this and wondered how anyone who says they love the Lord Jesus Christ can behave in such a manner, I remembered that my first job is to pray for all parties involved. Just as interesting is what was brought to my remembrance ... In John 7, a woman is brought to Jesus that was caught in the act of adultery (though I still wonder why the man wasn't brought). The crowd around her would have stoned her according to the law but Jesus asked said to them, " let you who are w/o sin cast the 1st stone." The crowd walked away dropping their stones and Jesus sent the woman away and told her to sin no more. The other is the parable of the wheat and the tares in Matthew 13. It's not our job to disrespectfully address the lifestyle of anyone. GOD will deal with each of us at our appointed time but unitl then, we love, we pray, and we are supposed to trust GOD. Protesting at children's funerals is nothing new for this group. Protesting at military funerals wasn't getting them enough attention so they started saying outlandish things about dead Boy Scouts and announce plans to be at a young girls funeral. I do a podcast of sorts through Blogtalk radio. I invited the WBC to come on my show and explain their activities. Their spokesperson seemed frustrated by the fact that I had a very experienced minister on the show that day who kept her in line from a biblical standpoint. The interaction between myself, the guests, and the callers is something I'll never forget.
