Luis Vazquez' body found in Missouri state park near Whiteman Air Force Base

  • Luis Vazquez was reportedly shot to death in a state park.

AWOL Whiteman airman Kerby Barbe allegedly told his girlfriend that he'd critically injured a fellow airman and left him in Knob Noster State Park, which isn't far from Missouri's Whiteman Air Force Base. And that's exactly where authorities found the body of Airman 1st Class Luis Vazquez on Friday. He'd been missing for five days, and authorities are now investigating his death as a homicide, according to The Kansas City Star.

The story is definitely a bizarre one that started with Barbe and Vazquez not showing up at work on Monday, sending Air Force authorities searching for the men. They found Barbe in a wooded area of a subdivision in Blanco County, Texas; he died from a self-inflicted gunshot

wound as authorities surrounded him. Barbe reportedly had an assault rifle, 300

rounds of

ammo and military body armor.

Reports at the time indicated that Barbe, 19, was suspected of killing Vazquez. Authorities are still working on determining Vazquez' cause of death, although he reportedly suffered a gunshot wound and was apparently dressed for winter.

Here's a weird twist in the story, via the Star:

Investigators said they thought Airman Kerby Barbe, 19,

drove Vazquez's pickup to Texas and shot himself with an assault rifle

Tuesday evening as authorities approached him. Investigators learned

from Barbe's girlfriend that he told her he had critically wounded an

airman and left his body in Knob Noster State Park.

"He denied killing the airman," Heiss said.

Critically wounded and left for dead in a state park?

Barbe and Vazquez were apparently friends, spending their off-duty time together. They also took classes together. They'd previously trained together.

Barbe reportedly bought an assault rifle at the base exchange on Sunday, prior to being seen with Vazquez in the barracks around 10 p.m. Barbe reportedly left the base Sunday evening, and the Star reports that his ID was checked coming back between 11 and 11:30 p.m. Vazquez was never seen leaving the base or returning. Just bizarre. With Barbe and Vazquez both dead, we may never get answers to what led up to

the killing.

From what I have read both boys seem to be good guys. It is sad that the living can not understand that no one knows what happened that night. It could have been either one who set off the events. Lets hold judgement for the lord as he and the boys only know what happened. Something does not seem right for two friends with the character that people have expressed about them to end this way. I pray for all for understanding and forgiveness for both boys. With Luis passing first there is no way to know if he caused it and with Kerby not saying anything there is no way to know if he started it. That is the worse part and for that I will not judge either one of them. God Bless them and their grieving families. The ones left behind are the victims.

You guys need to stop. There is too much hate here. They were both True American's. Just because of this event does not make one better than the other. God is the only judge for this event. Stop being hateful to each other it does not serve a purpose

You have every right to be angry BUT you have no right to say what the Barbe family can or can't do. Maybe you should re-read what you wrote, full of nastiness, hate and judgement. They are suffering also. You can be mad at Kerby Barbe but not at his family, they did not have anything to do with what happened. They only want to have the good memories just like you want to have for your son. Maybe you should pray about the truth coming out and then both families can make peace over what has happened.

As a former USAF Security Policeman like Barbe and Vazquez, and now a civilian police homicide detective, my theory would be one of the oldest in the books...it was over a woman. Although I do not have anymore details than what was written in the article above. I have seen romance divide lifelong friends, and romantic triangles cause powerful emotions that have been the motive of many homicides. My sympathies go out to the family of Airman Vazquez.

You lost someone, you are allowed to angry, however since no one yet knows exactly what got this ball of tragedy rolling, you should watch your words. You have no right to say what our family can do. I am sorry for your loss. Hate breeds hate and more ignorance. No one who knew Kerby has anything bad to say about him. Just try to find someone who did and then continue to rant and rave. You are allowed to grieve and be angry, but just remember there are two families suffering, not just yours.

THIS YOUNG BOY WAS ONLY 18 BORNED AND RAISED IN USA AND HE BROUGHT MORE HONOR TO THIS COUNTRY. THEN YOU AND BARBE TOGETHER COULD EVER BRING!!! BARBE IS A COLD BLOODED MURDER AND HIS FAMILY SHOULD NOT EVEN BE ALLOWED TO DISPLAY THAT PICTURE OF HIM IN UNIFORM!!! HE COMITED A CRIME! HE DID NOT HONOR HIS MLITARY VALUES!! AND NOTHING BUT SHAME SHOULD BE PUT IN HIS GRAVE. SO NEXT TIME YOU THINK ON MAKING A RACIST COMENT LIKE THAT, THINK TWICE! THAT’S THE REASON WE HAVE SO MANY KEBRY BARBE’S IN THIS WORLD!!

Mr. Yeoman. I cannot express how much loathing I feel for you after reading your comment, so I'll just say that I briefly knew this young man and was more of an American than you could ever dream of being.

God bless Luis's family and friends.

That airman served so you could post that comment. Amn Vazquez was one of the hardest working people i have ever met, our country would be lucky to have more people like him in it, we'd be in a much better place, instead of this ignorance and hate.
