The Rev. Jerry Johnston isn't getting much sympathy as his First Family Church faces foreclosure. The Overland Park megachurch owes more than $13 million to Regions Bank, but there has long been question of financial accountability at the church. The Mountains Made Flat
comes through with the Comment of the Day for this quip:
"Jerry might even have to give up his Black American Express Card and take some of his family off the payroll.
The Lord giveth; and the Lord taketh away."

Yes, but the fact remains, that Jeremy isn't going to Oxford University, as is implied when the phrase "Oxford scholar" is used to describe one's academic status. His 'actions' do not make him an "Oxford scholar"...attending Oxford University as a PhD candidate would. The research he is doing may or may not make him any kind of 'scholar'.
These actions are consistent with the J Johnston's use of honorary degrees and generally misleading their congregation and the public in general.
'Fact Checker'- um I have done my homework - Jeremy is a scholar, from Oxford, that is not misleading. You have not checked your facts. Oxford Univ does not validate PhD's. Have you seen Jeremy in action? Are you aware he has an 'A' Bodleian card and regularly works in the Bodleian laps consulting 2,000 year old manuscripts translating texts. If they are 'completely unrelated' why is he doing that? I have a feeling they don't let 'unrelated' scholars hold their manuscripts every week. Why are Oxford Dons lecturing at OCMS' doctoral seminars weekly if they are wholly 'unrelated'. There are now rumors he's been invited to an ivy league school this fall as a visiting fellow. At any rate, it really doesn't matter. Looks like he is moving on.
I think it's funny you say Jeremy is a scholar from Oxford because that seems misleading. He didn't go to the prestigious University of Oxford but Oxford Centre for Missions Study, completely unrelated to the University there except for the fact that it is in the same city. Do your homework.
Truth.... you had better check you facts. First, in addition to Jerry, his wife Christie has drawn a salary, Jeremy, whom you reference, both his daughters and their husbands and his mother (admin asst) have been on the payroll.
There are some very loyal FFC members, no doubt. However, I do not think the number is actually 5,000. That is part of the problem. Worship attendance seems to have tanked over the past 3-4 years and is at least part of the cause for the foreclosure proceedings.
I am not sure how Jeremy's education came into the discussion, but it wasn't all the long ago that both father and son referred to PhD, as "Pile on Higher and Deeper".
Perhaps a better verse for "Truth" would be, "Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened".
$14 million is quite a bit of money, even for a "megachurch", and its ridiculous to claim that a church is that upside down becaue of a soft economy. Apparently Jerry's son didn't matriculate from Oxford with an economics degree.
Perhaps "Truth" can explain what actually happened.
How many family members of Pastor Jerry are on the payroll? I would encourage "moron from the mountains" to name them. Any of the 5,000 members of First Family Church would confirm, if you asked them, that only one of Pastor Jerry's 'family members' are on the church payroll... His son...who is a scholar from Oxford. Your publication again - prints nonfactual information - you have no credibility. You are a joke.
