Former Kansas State Wildcat Brandon Banks was stabbed outside of a Washington, D.C., nightclub while trying to help a friend being attacked by a knife-wielding man.

Banks, now with the Washington Redskins, suffered a surface wound to his side, the AP reported. He was stitched up and should be out of the hospital by the time you read this. That's the good news.

Banks' agent, James Gould, told the AP that Banks' unnamed friend was critically injured in the attack and had to undergo surgery.

From the AP:

The stabbing occurred shortly after 3 a.m. outside The Park at 14th, an upscale nightclub. According to D.C. police, a man got into a verbal altercation with two men, then pulled a knife and stabbed them. Police did not identify the victims, but the Redskins confirmed that Banks was injured in the attack.

The suspect -- Jason Shorter, 24, of Lanham, Md. -- was arrested and charged with assault with intent to kill, police said.

Banks has found his way in the NFL as a kick returner -- returning his first punt as a pro 53 yards. Banks was a Wildcat from 2008 until last season, when the Redskins signed him as an undrafted rookie.
