Last week, The Kansas City Star published all of the seven mayoral candidates' plans to address violent crime. One of the hopefuls, attorney Sly James, voiced his opinion that the Kansas City Police Department needs more diversity on the force. It's not the first time we've heard that sentiment.
Which begs the question: How white is the KCPD, really? The answer: lily.
The KCPD Media Unit was kind enough to send us demographic data from December 2010 that divvies up all sworn KCPD officers by race and gender. Observe the male-cop graph:
percent of KCPD officers who are white males. (In numbers, that's 971 white guys.) The purple sliver is the 8 percent of black male KCPD officers (116 black guys). There are 52 Hispanic men on the force, which is about 4 percent, and the rest, "Other," breaks down like this: Indian (.35
percent), Asian (6 percent), Pacific Islander (.14 percent), mixed race
(3.7 percent) and unknown* (1.4 percent).
The corresponding graph for female police officers is below:

i think kcpd should consider hiring more blacks and since we have a number of muslims and africans they should consider african too .
There will always be banter. The fact of the matter is that in minority populations instead of getting into law enforcement to make a change people would rather complain about the racism that goes on. I say stop complaining and start going out and getting involved. But I might add that it is a selective process and it is disciminatory I know a number of black and hispanic people (all more than qualified) who tried to get into the police force and for one they are not hiring and two its a buddy system you have to know some one to get selected... thus more whites than black get accepted.
Here is the Problem, if the Black community, and its people were more qualified, then maybe there could be more black officers on the force. I get so sick of the black community playing the race card all the time. I am white work downtown, all I hear is Racist statements from the black community, not from the whites... what is up with you all? Wake up and stop blaming white people for your problems, stand up for yourselves and all the white people will respect you. Disrespect will never get you ahead in this game.
Look like it is a close representation to the population in KC. I do not see why you would make this story sound like a negative thing.

As Mark Twain said, there are 3 types of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics. Go back and give us one more pie chart: What percentages of Kansas City residents in the four groups you show can meet the minimum education, age, and/or experience requirements of the KCPD ? If you don't have them available you will have to go to other cities and recruit, and you will likely have to pay hefty salary increases to get folks to move here. Whether the requirements are too high is another question, but you can't force people to go into a line of work just to make everyone feel better.
Sammy is exactly right, but where are the individuals who supposedly MANAGE the police department? We have a police board of people recommended by who knows who and appointed by the governor, who don't seem to have even a superficial understanding of what's going on. Two muders every week of the year? They'll discuss that at the next meeting. A homicide clearance rate of only 42%. First time they've heard about that!
Officers in the street are out every day doing the best they can, but their jobs are made much more difficult and unnecessarily dangerous working in an organization that has no priorities, no strategic initiatives, no innovative programs, no performance standards, and no management or oversight of actual results. When the most important PR challenges for the police board are Ollie Gates' complaining, expense accounts, and seatbealts, the cluelessness of this group could not be more stark.
Sure, having the board is an odd arrangement that in the entire country only KCMO and St Louis have, but that doesn't excuse incompetence, lack of oversight, and downright apathy by the folks appointed to run the KCPD. The incumbents should either get serious or resign. The stakes are way too high and the bar has fallen way too low.
Kansas City residents share concerns about the proposed city budget....... here's some more concerns. Look where your tax dollars go. Just at KCPD.
Kansas City police commanders, lobbyist charge taxpayers for pricey meal and booze at Capital Grill. In all, Lewis and Stewart charged about $7,000 last year in meals, gas and other expenses for about 80 days' worth of work between them. They also charged about $5,000 for lodging. In 2009, they charged about $7,600 in meals and expenses and about $6,000 in lodging.
100 New Kansas City police cars sit idle in storage.
The Kansas City Police Department spent at least $2.1 million in the last 13 months to buy
more than 100 vehicles that will take months — perhaps years — to fully deploy.
And some Kansas City Council members, still in the midst of their own budget crisis, are
angry. Part of that money, they contend, might have helped keep officers on the streets
instead of keeping idle cars in a garage for the future. “We know they need cars,” said
Councilwoman Deb Hermann. “But we need things at the city, too.”
Police Board Criticizes KCPD Clearance Rate
2010 KCPD HOMICIDE CLEARANCE RATE PLUMMETS TO 41 percent. Kansas City Police Board members said they were disappointed with the low number of cases solved so far this year. — 40 out of 95 homicides. Kansas city is known as the ‘Kansas City Murder Factory’ and a Documentary challenges community members.

Typical KCPD Hypocracy.
Ollie Gates is reportedly upset that KCPD used his restaurant's parking lot near 45th and
Paseo as a command post for an Operation 100 on Wednesday, Christine Vendel writes.
Gates also called Mayor Mark Funkhouser and asked him to come to the restaurant to see how officers had clogged up his lot and scared away potential customers. He told Funkhouser the disruption cost him an estimated $3,300.
“Basically, it shut him down for the night,” said Funkhouser, who responded to the scene. “I
thought he was right.”

Justice Dept. To Probe KCPD Hiring Practices
Having solved all of KC's problems, KCPD Detectives enforces jaywalking ..... I guess two
people dying per week is ok, So we'll use detectives to catch jaywalking, and this happened to coincide with the NAACP's national conference in Kansas city.
The E-Tax is Dead folks.
