This is brilliant. Kansas City-based AMC Theatres is banking on the fact that (1) you haven't seen all 10 Best Picture nominees for the 2011 Academy Awards or (2) you're a total movie geek who needs to see them all again in order to know which film to root for.
Lots of movie houses, banking on annual Oscar fever, are showing the nominees right now, including titles that came out earlier in the year and are now available on DVD, such as the southern Missouri-set Winter's Bone. But the AMC Best Picture Showcase is the easiest way to catch all 10, on an actual theater screen, for a not-unreasonable price.
Starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 26, the AMC Mainstreet 6 (and other AMC screens across the country) will show all 10 Best Picture nominees, in succession, beginning with WTF nominee Toy Story 3. From there, it's 127 Hours, The Kids Are All Right, True Grit, The Fighter, Winter's Bone, Black Swan, Inception, The Social Network and The King's Speech, which begins at 7:05 a.m. on Sunday, February 27.
Obviously, anyone who's still in the theater for The King's Speech is not going to stay awake. Whatever zzz's they catch in the stadium seats might help them stay awake through the actual Academy Awards ceremony, which airs live on the evening of February 27.
Admission to the 24-hour marathon is $50 and includes a $20 gift card, which can be used for concessions.
Kindly, four other local AMC theaters -- AMC Studio 30, AMC Town Center 20, AMC Barrywoods 24 and AMC Independence Commons 20 -- offer another option for people with lives and responsibilities outside of keeping up on Hollywood trivia. Split your screen time between two Saturdays by catching five films on February 19 and the other five on February 26. The two-day pass is $60 and comes with a $20 gift card.
You can also commit to just one Saturday for $35. And you get a $10 gift card. (Because $10 buys sooooo much movie-theater food.)
