Kansas City Chiefs hall-of-famer Ed Podolak was seriously injured after being hit by a car Sunday morning in Scottsdale, Arizona, the Des Moines Register reported.

Podolak, the longtime color commentator for the Iowa Hawkeyes, is reportedly in stable condition with "non-life-threatening injuries." He was attending a wedding in Arizona and was hit while crossing a street near the hotel where he was staying.

Podolak's daughter, Laura, released the following statement to the Register:

"University of Iowa football color commentator and former Kansas City Chiefs running back Ed Podolak suffered serious injuries when he was hit by a car outside his hotel in Scottsdale, Ariz., early Sunday morning.

"Podolak suffered major injuries, but is in stable condition at a Scottsdale area hospital.

"Police say alcohol was not a factor."

To add some clarity on that last point, Podolak sought out "professional treatment" a couple of years ago after pictures surfaced of him drinking and clowning around with Hawkeye fans during a bowl game trip.

Podolak's broadcasting partner, Gary Dolphin, said on a radio show Monday night that Podolak had suffered broken legs and ribs.

Podolak's family is asking for "privacy" while Podolak recovers. Laura Podolak later told the Register that her father was "stable and alert. My dad is in good spirits and is continuing his recovery."

Podolak was a running back for the Chiefs from 1969 to 1977. He's the franchise's second all-time leading rusher with 4,451 yards and 34 touchdowns. In 1971, he set an NFL playoff record with 350 yards.

Wishing him the best. My sister had a major crush on him in the 70's, and I met him once in Independence when he had a restaurant here. He sat down and talked to me and we laughed about my sister's crush. He was very personable, friendly. I hope his alcohol troubles are behind him and that he makes a full recovery from this accident.
