Well, this is a funny coincidence. Earlier this week, Missouri's House Agriculture Committee unanimously agreed on a bill that completely guts the voter-approved Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act. The committee felt that Missouri's residents just weren't educated enough to really understand how providing things like "necessary veterinary care" or removing "feces" from drinking water would be bad for dog breeders.
That committee hearing was unique because the bill's leading proponent, Rep. Jason Smith, sat in and argued for it even though he wasn't actually a member of the committee. As the majority whip, the Salem Republican can get in on any committee he wants at any time as an ex officio member. But you know what's even weirder? It turns out that Smith's mom owns a puppy mill outside Salem! Isn't that funny?
I know what you're thinking: "Wow. That is a crazy coincidence." It gets even crazier!
You know how the bill, which Smith is leading the charge to gut, is supposed to prevent unsanitary conditions and animal cruelty? Well, get this. Smith's mom, kennel owner Mary Ann Smith, was actually cited by the Humane Society of the United States as one of the 12 worst puppy mills in the state last year, or "Missouri's Dirty Dozen." The Humane Society report said Smith's operation had a history of repeatedly violating USDA regulations for more than a decade. Citations included "unsanitary conditions; dogs exposed to below-freezing temperatures or excessive heat without adequate shelter from the weather; dogs without enough cage space to turn and move around freely; pest and rodent infestations; injured and bleeding dogs, dogs with loose bloody stools who had not been treated by a vet."
Loose bloody stools, and not treated by a vet. Huh. It really is a small world, isn't it?
Surely none of this has in, any way, influenced his decision to completely ignore the will of the voters in a lawful election. Life's just funny sometimes.

If you fax or email Jason more that a few times and he doesn't like what you have to say the will BLOCK you
I rescued a dog that Jason Smith owned from a dog auction five years ago..she was about two years old and arrived to us shaved down and covered with some sort of insecticide and an ordor that forced us to drive in freezing werther with the windows down for 9 hours. The vet found two types of mange, a hernia, teeth that were rotted nibs, bilatteral ear infections, a UIT, a uterine infection and she was PREGNANT.DId I mention that she was TWO YEARS OLD?
She has been here with us for four years because we were never able to rehab her to the point where she could find another home. BTW, she STILL grovels to us when we call her.
Smith was already an elected offica, ands we was at the auction that dayl but he tried to cover up his ounership for the 35 doogs he was selling that day by putting someone elses name on the autction papers. Interestingly, when we registered the dog with AKC he was listed as the owner. We lated learned from the european breeder that he was also the importer.
If Missouri voters actually gave this moron enough votes to represent them in matters regarding elections and outcomes of same, then they deserve him.
I hope this new batch of elected idiots realize that they have one term, that is if they are not recalled, in which to screw up much of the state of our nation.
Shall we play the Ask-A-Farmer game?
Why, farmer, does 'agriculture' care SO much about puppies?
Is it for their hides?
For their meat?
For their ribs?
For their milk?
For their fur?
For their bone meal?
For their rendered fat?
For their offal?
For their puppy- bellies'?
For their puppy-futures traded on the NYSE?
For their puppy-meat packing plants?
For their export value?
For their adrenal glands?
For their government puppy-crop subsidies?
For their supermarket puppy-chops and steaks?
For their live puppy sales speculated on the Dow?
For their value on the Kansas City Puppy Livestock Exchange?
Kind of makes one wonder why the f we even bother to vote- oh yes, its one of out last rites (sp) as free persons.
I remember a couple years ago voting on light rail and of course, irregardless of the public's choice, the "moneychangers in the temple" went ahead and did their own thing.
I also remember voting a couple years back for "change" in America and its still the same old DuPont Circle quickstep as we had with "the bumpkin".
Why should I be surprised that yet another issue on which votes were cast that our glorious leader(s) take it upon themselves to re-interpret the issue, re-invent the wheel, and re-invest their own best interests.
I tell ya friends and neighbors, I LOVE my country- served faithfully both in the military and as a law abiding, tax paying voting CITIZEN, but I think we, as a species, are on the cusp of something drastic.
Its already happening in the middle east.
They're mad as hell and they're not going to take it any more.
We've been mad as hell for quite some years, but in the interest of "status quo" and "you can't fight city hall" , and "not my problem...
We keep rolling over and taking it in the shorts.
Meanwhile big brother business grows more powerful than the will of the people; Washington TAKES more- gives less and by the way, when is the last time a Congressman or Senator took a pay freeze, ?,
Okay, take a double dose of Fukitol, relax and wait for the Revolution, the Rapture,
...the Rabbit
Now that Missouri's rural interest groups control the vote, who's to stop them from tossing out Bark Alert?
Rural interest groups have made it VERY clear that dogs are 'livestock'.
They say it everyday.
People here are saying it. Prop B radicals will " destroy all of our animal agriculture "
Bark Alert concerns dogs, and dogs are cattle, why doesn't Bark Alert apply to cows and pigs?
Maybe Bark Alert is another 'slippery slope' toward eliminating cattle. .
Don't be surprised if the rural special interest groups do not stop with Proposition B. .
His god says to take care of animals, and he disobeys. Yet he'll claim that it was his god's will that he pushes for a pro-life agenda to take away the rights of women to choose abortion if they wish and pro-death agenda for criminals.
Don't you love hypocrites?
The problems weren't with the existing laws. They were with enforcement. There aren't enough tax dollars around to enforce the laws on the books so what good does adding more laws do?
Jason Smith is another example of people failing , they want the problems to continue to make money, regardless of who suffers. God states in the Bible that man is to take care of his animals, and people like this Smith are doing the exact opposite and failing so badly, the rest of the people have to take a stand and start correcting these problems once and for all God help us all if they don't
Enough of the suffering!!!
Well maybe we would like to "gut" his appointment to office. Another raid this week of a puppy mill with horrible conditions for these poor dogs. What is wrong with people...they cannot have a heart if they let these horrible puppy mills conditions continue.
Jason Smith did not merely "sit in" - he was invited by the committee and he (Jason S) claims the committee is aware that his folks breed dogs and that his folks do a shitty job of it. His participation was deliberate. This entire committee thumbs its nose at voters.
I, for one, believe it was Jason's car, discovered on the Plaza earlier this month, with squirrels zip tied to the bumper.
I feel like a Vegematic salesperson but...
Wait, there's more!
Jason Smith is also the sponsor of HJR17, which wants to add a Constitutional Amendment that would prohibit any citizen initiative related to animals. So something like Proposition B, and the previous legislation related to cock fighting, or any other bill related to livestock, pets, or wildlike wouldn't be allowed as a citizen initiative.
