Kansas City has apparently caught the attention of a rising food star. Brooklyn chef and cookbook author Aaron Sanchez is eyeing Kansas City for the latest restaurant in his budding food empire.
A frequent guest on such Food Network shows as Chopped and Chefs. vs. City, Sanchez currently owns and operates two restaurants, Centrico and Tacombi, in New York City. And according to The New York Post, he's "planning to open a restaurant in Kansas City this fall."
A fire that destroyed a Kansas City mosque is now being called "suspicious," according to KCTV5. The blaze started around 3 a.m. at the mosque on the first floor of a three-story building at 4614 St. John Avenue and was under control about an hour later. KMBC reported that the blaze was a three-alarm fire.
Thankfully, no one was injured in the fire. If this fire was set intentionally, which the word "suspicious" implies, this could become one of the most disturbing stories we've seen this year.
Country musician Rodney Crowell has been making music for the better part of his life, going all the way back to playing drums in a band with his father at the age of 11. He has worked with Emmylou Harris as part of her Hot Band, and married into country-music royalty when he wed Rosanne Cash. His 1988 album Diamonds & Dirt yielded five number ones on the Billboard country charts, including "I Couldn't Leave You if I Tried."
However, in his recent memoir, Chinaberry Sidewalks, Crowell focuses more on the story of his family, barely touching on his musical accomplishments. The heartfelt book, which Crowell describes as "a very forgiving book," tells the tale of his life growing up in Texas. Chinaberry Sidewalks contains tales of being dirt-poor and dealing with an alcoholic father and epileptic mother, yet manages to never sound maudlin or weepy.
Crowell's tour for the book brings him and his guitar to Knuckleheads for a solo show tomorrow, March 1. We were fortunate enough to speak with Crowell by phone last Friday about the book, his writing process, and what to expect at the show.
The Metro Squad is trying to piece together why three men were shot and killed Saturday inside a hotel room at a Northland Red Roof Inn.
Authorities say the victims are 18-year-olds Dejan Joksimovic and Armin Hamidovic and 22-year-old Delfino Elizondo. The Star reported that no arrests have been made, and detectives are still trying to figure out what led up to the triple homicide.
Another semitrailer full of Nike Air Jordans has been stolen. This time, the trailer was jacked in Junction City, Kansas.
On Christmas Eve, thieves stole a semitrailer packed with 4,716
pairs of Nike Air Jordan Classics 90. The thieves apparently made it to at least Council Bluffs, Iowa,
Authorities believe the thieves stole a second truck, hooked it
to the trailer full of shoes and kept on rolling.
"You know, my cousins saw Kid Rock at Sandstone around 6 to 8 years ago," my friend said, shivering in the cold with me outside the sold-out Sprint Center on Friday night before Kid Rock took the stage. At the show he was describing, Kid Rock had been rolling through his set with his usual hard-hitting badassery when something truly remarkable happened: The woman next to them, er, "dropped to her knees and started working away at her man" in the middle of the show. (Kid Rock was simply too much for her and her boyfriend, I guess.)
You understand why I wasn't quite sure what to expect. After all, how many boob flashes have ever happened at the Sprint Center?
The main difference between a raucous crowd at Sandstone in late summer humidity, however, and a raucous crowd at the Sprint Center in February is a marked one. (Leather jackets and bandannas replaced tube tops and cut-off T-shirts, for starters.)
In Kansas, driving a motorcycle might come with one less annoyance. Lawmakers approved a bill that would allow motorcycle riders to go through red lights if their vehicles aren't heavy enough to trip the weight sensors under the street that change the signal.
It's a better plan than dropping the kickstand and running over to hit the crosswalk button.
Well, this is a funny coincidence. Earlier this week, Missouri's House Agriculture Committee unanimously agreed on a bill that completely guts the voter-approved Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act. The committee felt that Missouri's residents just weren't educated enough to really understand how providing things like "necessary veterinary care" or removing "feces" from drinking water would be bad for dog breeders.
That committee hearing was unique because the bill's leading proponent, Rep. Jason Smith, sat in and argued for it even though he wasn't actually a member of the committee. As the majority whip, the Salem Republican can get in on any committee he wants at any time as an ex officio member. But you know what's even weirder? It turns out that Smith's mom owns a puppy mill outside Salem! Isn't that funny?
Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster released the top 10
consumer complaints and scams reported to his office in 2010. The
leading complaint came against, drum roll, debt collectors! Go figure that in
a recession, debt collectors would rank high. The AG's office received more than 2,200 calls complaining about debt collectors (sorry, unnamed credit-card company).
"Even though you may be responsible for the debt the collectors are calling about, there are federal laws governing just how far the debt collector can go," Koster said in a statement. "Your best protection against harassing and abusive calls from debt collectors is to know your rights. The Federal Trade Commission's Debt Collection FAQs: A Guide for Consumers can be found on their website at www.ftc.gov." Was Joe Strummer ever wrong? Know your rights! The rest of the top 10 after the jump.
